- “The art of sport becomes the art of war.”
Heroball is a 2008 American animated dystopian sports action film produced by TjsWorld2011 Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies and DreamWorks Pictures for Paramount Pictures. It was the eighth feature film produced by TW2011 Pictures, as well as the first under its current name. This is also DreamWorks Pictures' first animated film without its former animation division DreamWorks Animation, which was spun off into a separate public company in 2004.
The film takes place in the year 2245, where all major sport activities have been eliminated in favor of Heroball, an activity akin to paintball claimed by The World District to be utterly flawless. However, a teenage athlete of this game named Zack Evans (Nathan Kress), who is set to play on the District 13 Team against each Subdistrict in the 200th semi-annual Heroball World Tournament, discovers a loophole in its mechanics. He and his friends Amanda West (Cathy Cavadini) and Pat Stevens (Michael Stark) rush to find out why the District has been covering up this secret for years, but their investigations prove to have dangerous consequences for the rest of the Heroball community.
Heroball was originally scheduled to be released on August 15, 2008, but was pushed back to August 8 to avoid competition with Warner Bros.' Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The film was released to generally positive reviews from critics, who admired its story, themes, and setting. It was later released on DVD and Blu-ray on December 9, 2008.
